My Dream, God's Call
What's my PURPOSE?
God created each of us with a PURPOSE (yes, in all caps). This isn’t a job title or a place on a family tree. This is an appointment, a calling. Some callings are more ostentatious than others, but all are God-designed to give us our best life – a life that challenges us to stand above our fears and promises rewards we could never have imagined. I want that life.
I see people take their calling out for a spin in athletic arenas. I see it in the risks people take to create something new or challenge the status quo. I hear it in the stories of children who sacrifice for years to become a classical pianist or an Olympic contender. Some people know as children what they were made to do, and others find it by hook or crook or accident. Some spend their whole lives wondering. And what about those who don't seem to care? Those who work, retire, and die never curious about life’s unexplored nooks and crannies? Are they missing the point of this wild, crazy thing called life?
Then, I think the worst thought...what if I unconsciously know my PURPOSE but I’ve been too scared to pursue it? Even the most gifted athlete, talented singer, convincing actor, or stirring poet has to practice. Has to put in the 10,000 hours. What if my calling has been in front of me all along but I haven't had the courage to slog through the naysayers, setbacks, missteps, and doubt? Living out your PURPOSE takes courage and persistence.
I recently rediscovered a story that perfectly illustrates this point. It’s the story of a hero. I love heroes. I love their ability to dream big, to act despite fear, and to see beyond present circumstances. This real life hero was an orphan. We know she was beautiful, but she didn’t have an obvious talent or skill, no special position or status by birth. On the surface, in the beginning, it looked like her life was and would always be ho-hum. But then her beauty made her queen, and her courage saved a nation. When faced with seemingly certain death – an obstacle all heroes must encounter – she embraced her calling and trusted God for a way out. If you’re curious who I’m talking about, check out Esther‘s story!
There’s a correlation between dreaming big and trusting God. It’s like this continuous feedback loop – the more I trust God, the bigger the dream he gives me. This is when miracles happen! When we set our mark beyond what our eye can see or mind can fathom, we’re trusting God to do what only he can.
So I’ve discovered my PURPOSE is to trust God. When I do my part and God does his part (i.e. keeps his promises), his plans – my dreams – will be fulfilled. Ultimately, it’s not about me. It’s about him.

What do children do best? They dream! It takes faith to dream and to trust God with our dreams. God wants his children to come to him with simple faith, allowing Him to be the Father of our dreams, trusting him no matter what. Our dependency on the supernatural God of our universe (and not our own limitations) is the strength behind our dreams. This painting of children flying a kite illustrates what happens when we dream with God. He allows our dreams to take flight! Ephesians 5:8-10 “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.”
